About

As our founding partner Stanley K. Hathaway always said: “We come to a good place, and we hope we can leave it a better place.”

Wyoming is our good place.

By leading the way in numerous practice areas—including emerging technology, DAO, SPDI and digital assets—we’re not only propelling progress within the legal arena; we’re on the frontline of propelling progress for the state of Wyoming itself.

“Stay the course.”

Brent R. Kunz, founding partner

Since 1975, we’ve held true to the course and principles set out by our founders:

Integrity matters.

Honesty is non negotiable.

And the single, most important element of our work is what it gains for our clients.

It’s with great honor we carry on the Hathaway & Kunz legacy today, and work to continuously propel progress for our state and its people.

The Hathaway & Kunz Legacy

Hathaway & Kunz, LLP, was founded in 1975 by Stanley K. Hathaway and Brent R. Kunz—the former, a two-term Wyoming Governor and U.S. Secretary of Interior, and the latter, a Counsel for U.S. Senator Clifford P. Hansen and Special Assistant to Secretary Hathaway in Washington, D.C.

Throughout their careers, both gentlemen worked tirelessly to protect Wyoming’s natural resources and economy. It’s with great honor that we carry on their legacy today, fighting with an unflagging spirit and devotion for Wyoming’s ordinary people and the businesses that support our state’s economic well-being.

An avid outdoorsman, Brent R. Kunz spent the majority of his successful and distinguished legal career protecting and advocating for Wyoming’s public lands.

During his time as an attorney at the Department of Interior in Washington, D.C., Brent was approached by U.S. Sen. Clifford P. Hansen to work as legal counsel for the Interior and Insular Affairs Committee (now known as the Natural Resource Committee). Later, Brent had the privilege and opportunity to work with Stanley Hathaway (then serving as Secretary of the Interior) during his confirmation hearings.

Throughout his life, Brent was often sought out for his wisdom and incredible knowledge. In addition to his love for family, friends, and the great outdoors, Brent is remembered for his genuine character, kind words and integrity.

Stanley K. Hathaway

One of the most beloved public figures in our state’s history, Stanley K. Hathaway was a man of principle and courage who battled for the people and land of Wyoming.

Gov. Hathaway’s profound influence on Wyoming’s past and future cannot be overstated. Following his death in 2005, the two-time governor and former Secretary of the Interior was memorialized by the Wyoming legislature as “one of Wyoming’s greatest natural resources”—a fitting tribute for a humble man who selflessly and tirelessly committed his life to bolstering and protecting Wyoming’s natural resources and economy.
